Take Profit Stop Loss Formula

Stop-Loss Price = Entry Price x (1 - Stop-Loss Percentage)
Risk per Share = Entry Price - Stop-Loss Price
Take-Profit Price = Entry Price + (Risk per Share x Risk-Reward Ratio)

Example Take Profit and Stop Loss Calculation

Suppose the entry price is $100, the stop-loss distance is 5%, and the risk-reward ratio is 2:1. The stop-loss price is $95 and the take-profit price is $110.

This type of calculation helps compare planned downside and upside before reviewing a trade scenario.

  1. Enter the entry price.
  2. Enter the stop-loss percentage.
  3. Enter the risk-reward ratio.
  4. Review stop-loss price, take-profit price, risk per share, and reward per share.

Take Profit and Stop Loss Comparison

Changing the risk-reward ratio changes the target price while the stop-loss distance stays the same. This example uses a $100 entry and 5% stop-loss.

EntryStop-LossRisk-RewardTake-Profit
$100$951:1$105
$100$952:1$110
$100$953:1$115

How to Interpret the Result

A higher risk-reward ratio raises the target price for the same stop-loss distance.

A target price can look attractive mathematically but still be unrealistic if market conditions do not support it.
