Cost Basis Formula

Total Cost Basis = (Shares x Purchase Price) + Commission + Fees
Cost per Share = Total Cost Basis / Shares
Target Price = Cost per Share x (1 + Desired Return)

Example Stock Cost Basis Calculation

Suppose you buy 100 shares at $50 and pay $10 in commissions and fees. The total cost basis is $5,010.

The cost per share becomes $50.10. This is the price level that better reflects the actual acquisition cost before considering future selling costs or taxes.

  1. Enter share count and purchase price.
  2. Add commissions and other purchase fees.
  3. Enter a desired return if you want a target price example.
  4. Review total cost basis, cost per share, breakeven price, and target price.

Cost Basis Fee Comparison

Small fees can change cost per share, especially on smaller positions. This table uses 100 shares at a $50 purchase price.

Purchase CostFeesTotal Cost BasisCost Per Share
$5,000$0$5,000$50.00
$5,000$10$5,010$50.10
$5,000$50$5,050$50.50

How to Interpret the Result

Cost per share helps compare the actual paid cost with a possible future sale price.

Target price is only a simple markup from cost basis. It does not indicate whether the market is likely to reach that price.

What This Calculator Does Not Include

This calculator does not apply tax-lot rules, wash sale adjustments, dividend reinvestment lots, spin-offs, or stock split history.

For tax reporting, broker records and qualified tax guidance matter more than a simplified estimate.
