Example Portfolio Allocation Calculation
Suppose a portfolio is worth $10,000 and the target allocation is 60% stocks, 30% bonds, 5% cash, and 5% other assets.
The target dollar amounts are $6,000 in stocks, $3,000 in bonds, $500 in cash, and $500 in other assets.
- Enter total portfolio value.
- Enter target percentage for each asset group.
- Check whether the total allocation equals 100%.
- Review the dollar amount for each category.
Portfolio Allocation Example Table
Allocation percentages become easier to review when converted into dollar amounts. This table uses a $10,000 portfolio.
| Asset Mix | Stocks | Bonds | Cash/Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aggressive | $8,000 | $1,500 | $500 |
| Balanced | $6,000 | $3,000 | $1,000 |
| Conservative | $4,000 | $5,000 | $1,000 |
How to Interpret the Result
Allocation dollar amounts help compare a target mix with actual holdings.
If percentages do not total 100%, the output can still calculate amounts, but the allocation plan is incomplete.
What This Calculator Does Not Include
